Pilularia globulifera, commonly known as the Pillwort, is a unique and fascinating aquatic fern. This plant is known for its grass-like appearance and is often found in shallow water or muddy margins of ponds and lakes. The P9 pot size, approximately 9 cm in diameter, indicates that the plant is sold in a compact form, which is ideal for transplanting into aquatic garden settings or small water features.

Why we like it:

• Ecological Importance: Pillwort plays a role in maintaining the biodiversity of wetland habitats, providing cover and oxygenating the water.
• Unique Appearance: Its grass-like appearance adds a distinct texture and greenery to pond edges and bog gardens.
• Low Maintenance: Requires minimal care once established in a suitable aquatic environment.

What to know:

• Habitat Requirements: Thrives in shallow, clean water or at the wet edges of ponds and lakes.
• Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade.
• Watering Needs: Naturally grows in aquatic settings; ensure it is either submerged or in consistently wet soil.
• Planting Depth: Should be planted with the crown just at or slightly above the water surface.
• Winter Care: Hardy and remains evergreen in milder climates but may die back in colder regions, resprouting in spring.

Plant Characteristics:

• Form: Produces creeping rhizomes and tiny, inconspicuous fronds that resemble grass.
• Reproduction: Notable for its unusual reproductive method using spore-bearing structures that resemble tiny peppercorns.

Flower Colour

N/A – As a fern, it does not produce flowers but reproduces via spores.

Flowering months

N/A – It does not flower but may show reproductive activity typically during the warmer months.

Height and Spread

The plant remains quite low, generally only a few centimeters tall, with a creeping habit that can spread over the soil or mud surface.

Pilularia globulifera is an excellent choice for adding to biodiversity in garden ponds, particularly appealing to those interested in creating or maintaining naturalistic water features. It’s also of interest to conservationists and gardeners who enjoy cultivating less common types of plants.
