Calathea fasciata, also known as the Calathea Zebra plant, is a captivating and popular species of the Calathea genus. This tropical evergreen plant is cherished for its striking foliage, featuring broad, lance-shaped leaves with contrasting green and silver stripes that resemble the stripes of a zebra, hence its common name. Native to Brazil, the Calathea fasciata is widely admired as an indoor ornamental plant, prized for its eye-catching appearance and unique leaf patterns.

Why We Like It:

• Striking zebra-like foliage: The Calathea fasciata’s distinct green and silver striped leaves create a visually captivating display, adding a touch of sophistication and intrigue to any indoor space.
• Air-purifying qualities: This plant is known for its air-purifying properties, effectively filtering out toxins and improving the air quality in its surroundings, making it a healthful and aesthetically pleasing addition to any home or office.
• Movement of leaves: The Calathea fasciata exhibits a unique characteristic known as “nyctinasty,” where its leaves fold upwards at night and unfold during the day, adding an animated and dynamic element to its charm.

What to Know:

• Light requirements: Calathea fasciata thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves and cause damage.
• Watering and humidity: Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid overwatering or allowing the plant to sit in standing water, as it is susceptible to root rot. Additionally, maintaining higher humidity levels, such as by using a humidity tray or regular misting, benefits the plant’s growth and health.
• Soil and potting: Plant Calathea fasciata in well-draining, peat-based potting mix to ensure proper aeration and moisture retention.
• Temperature requirements: Maintain the plant in a warm and stable environment, with temperatures ranging between 65-80F (18-27C).
• Pruning and grooming: Remove any brown or yellowing leaves to promote healthy growth and maintain the plant’s attractive appearance.

Flower Colour: The Calathea fasciata may produce small, inconspicuous purple or white flowers, but it is primarily grown for its striking foliage rather than its flowers.

Flowering Months: While Calathea fasciata can bloom under the right conditions, it rarely flowers indoors. Its main appeal lies in its stunning foliage.

Height and Spread: When fully grown, the Calathea fasciata typically reaches a height of around 2-3 feet (60-90 centimeters) with a similar spread, making it a compact and manageable indoor plant.
